Libresse, Nike and New York Times are big winners at D&AD Awards

D&AD gave out six coveted black Pencils this year.

Libresse’s "Viva la vulva", Nike’s Colin Kaepernick ad and The New York Times’ journalism campaign were among the black Pencil winners for creative excellence in advertising and design at tonight’s D&AD Awards ceremony. 

D&AD gave out six black Pencils, the most coveted category at the ceremony and reserved for groundbreaking work in the field. Last year, only three black Pencils were awarded. 

"Dream crazy", Nike’s spot starring the controversial NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, claimed one black Pencil in the Integrated category. Wieden & Kennedy Portland created the work, which celebrates athletes such as Kaepernick and tennis champion Serena Williams who pursued crazy dreams. 

"Viva la vulva", created by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO for Libresse and sister brand Bodyform, won in the Direction category. The ad, which aims to tackle women’s shame about their genitals, was directed by Kim Gehrig through Somesuch. 

The New York Times’ "The truth is worth it", created by Droga5 New York and produced by Furlined, won two black Pencils: one in TV Commercial Campaigns and one in Writing for Film. The campaign shed light on the rigour behind journalism and spotlight journalists who seek the truth.

BWM Dentsu took home a black Pencil in Digital Design for The ALS Association’s "Project Revoice", a digital voice clone that integrates with text-to-speech devices and gives people with ALS the ability to speak in their own voice even after they no longer can physically.

"Xbox Adaptive Controller" by Microsoft scooped a black Pencil in Product Design for a unified devices hub that helps make gaming more accessible to gamers with limited mobility.

D&AD named Droga5 its Advertising Agency of the Year. Adam & Eve/DDB came in second place. 

Academy was Production Company of the Year and Apple was Client of the Year.

The D&AD Collaborative Award, a new special prize honouring brave and innovative collaborations between clients and agencies, was given to Adam & Eve/DDB and John Lewis & Partners in Advertising, and Design Bridge and Fortnum & Mason in Design. 

This year, the President’s Award, the highest D&AD accolade reserved for people from the creative world, went to artist and stage designer Es Devlin. 

The US was the most-awarded country, while the UK came in second and Germany third. 

In total, 720 Pencils were awarded, compared with 721 in 2018. There were 58 yellow, 196 graphite and 460 wood Pencils.
