Between the Lines: Freesheet ruckus rolls on

This week's spat between Associated Newspapers and News International has been highly entertaining and has brought even more colour to a competitive newspaper industry (page 1).

Whatever the rights and wrongs in this, and there don't seem to be any early winners and losers yet among the free newspapers, perhaps it's worth remembering that both thelondonpaper and London Lite are still in their infancy.

While both scrap to carry greater levels of advertising, it should be noted that it took decades for some of the paid-for newspapers to become established. And there are already signs that the new titles, despite the brickbats flying around London, are here to stay.

Both Associated and NI have registered their new brands in cities outside London, and this regional expansion could ensure their longevity. Until then, we can enjoy the sideshow.
