The inaugural eventproduced by Artichoke and supported by the Mayor of London, will see Piccadilly, Jermyn Street, Regent Street, Carnaby, Oxford Circus and Mayfair host a series of light installations by renowned international artists.

Leicester Square will be transformed into an exotic tropical garden with giant, illuminated plants and flowers by the French artists Tilt, coined Garden of Light

Within Carnaby, British artist Julian Opie will unveil a double-sided monolith piece titled Shaida Walking, which will become a permanent fixture within the district once the festival ends.

American artist Janet Echelman’s 1.8 London aerial sculpture made of knotted twine, which is inspired by the 2011 Japanese tsunami, will hang overhead at Oxford Circus, and a red phone box will be transformed into an aquarium complete with goldfish at Mayfair.

Jermyn Street will showcase French artist Cedric Le Borgne’s larger-than-life human figures, which will be placed on and around buildings, meanwhile the installations at both Piccadilly Street and Regent Street remain under wraps.

Local retailers, restaurants, entertainment venues and hotels will provide a range of offers throughout the festival, and some brands are also set to be involved. Details of these will be released in due course, and the full event programme is to be announced in January.

Additional information can also be found at the dedicated Lumiere London website, which has been developed by London & Partners, the event’s lead media partner.

Karen Baines, head of marketing & communications of Heart of London Business Alliance, which represents Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and Piccadilly said: "We are incredibly excited that the year will officially start in London’s West End as Lumiere London transforms the area’s most iconic visitor destinations.

"The West End itself will take centre stage in this phenomenal light festival, and for the first time will give Londoners and visitors alike the chance to take a fresh new look at these historic and world renowned landmarks."

Clare Harris, head of group marketing and communications at Shaftesbury added: "It is hugely exciting that Lumiere is coming to London as it will highlight some of the most iconic destinations and show London in a new light. Carnaby has always been a creative hub and we are delighted to honour the only legacy piece in its 13 streets."
