Lygo set to axe all adult content in final move at Five

LONDON - Kevin Lygo, the outgoing director of programmes at Five, is to remove soft pornographic content from the schedule altogether before he leaves to join Channel 4.

The move is designed to complete Lygo's clean-up of the Five schedule aimed at repositioning the channel, which began when he joined two years ago.

The overhaul has seen the introduction of US hits such as 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' and 'The Shield', as well as putting arts programming in peaktime slots and a rebranding and image redesign.

Although Lygo reduced the amount of erotic programming -- once a notable part of the schedule -- on the channel, it still showed adult movies on Friday nights in an attempt to attract the post-pub male audience.

The rebranding was acclaimed by the press, and the channel showed less sexual content than Channel 4. However, he was almost undone by comments made by Adam Faith, who died of a heart attack earlier this year.

Faith is understood to have been watching Five in a hotel room and is reported to have said "Channel Five is all shit isn't it? Christ, the crap they put on there, it's a waste of space," just before he died.

His comments are understood to have led to renewed criticisms from the media and spurred Lygo to remove adult content altogether in his last attempt to clean up the channel.

Lygo announced last week that he is to replace Tim Gardam as director of television at Channel 4. His job at Five is to be handled by chief executive Jane Lighting, who has so far remained low profile since taking over from Dawn Airey in February, until a replacement is found.

Lygo is is expected to leave Five shortly, but is not expected to join Channel 4 until later this year.
