- Marks & Spencer's new marketing director has been tipped to be one of the main candidates to take over as chief executive of the trouble high street retailer when the incumbent, Peter Salsbury, retires, even though his identity is as yet unknown.
The offer of a shot at top job was billed as part of the package to attract a high calibre marketing director. It would also be the first time the job goes to an outsider. Salsbury has been with M&S since joining as a graduate trainee.
The search for a marketing director has been a difficult one with at least one candidate having turned down the job already. However, it is understood that a someone has been chosen although a name has not been revealed until a contract has been signed.
The new marketing director is expected to be in place before Christmas to oversee the crucial trading period. M&S's poor performance last year sparked a boardroom struggle that ended with the ousting of the chairman and chief executive, Sir Richard Greenbury.
