Martin Bowley, chief executive of Carlton Media Sales, ’has heard’
he is among those being considered as the next chief executive of
ITV has said that the successor to Richard Eyre will come from outside
the network. But there has been speculation that a number of candidates
from both Granada and Carlton are in the running.
Bowley admitted that he had ’heard his name was on the list’, and said
he would relish the opportunity, although he stressed that ’it is all
speculation at this stage’.
Other ITV candidates tipped to take the post include Granada’s chief
executive, Steve Morrison.
However Leslie Hill, chairman of the ITV Network, stressed that he was
still more likely to turn to an external candidate. ’It’s extremely
likely that whoever takes over will come from outside the network. It
makes sense to employ someone without a background in ITV. We have just
had our first discussion regarding Richard’s replacement and plan to go
through exactly the same process as last time. We are devising a brief
for a headhunter and several names have already come forward. ’
He added: ’Richard came from a radio and advertising background and that
worked very well’. Jim Hytner, Channel 5’s director of marketing, said:
’I think ITV will look for a chief executive from an advertising or
media agency’. Further speculation for candidates from outside of ITV
points to David Mansfield, Capital Radio’s chief executive, and Malcolm
Wall, United Broadcasting and Entertainment’s chief executive.
