McCanns takes on Cameron as part of new-business drive

McCann-Erickson has hired the Maher Bird Associates group director, Hugh Cameron, to take charge of its new-business effort.

McCann-Erickson has hired the Maher Bird Associates group director,

Hugh Cameron, to take charge of its new-business effort.

The former J. Walter Thompson account director will replace Amy Smith,

who quit as McCanns’ business development director last year to become

the marketing director of WCRS (Campaign, 17 October 1997).

Cameron’s forthcoming move comes after a two-and-a-half year spell at

Maher Bird and renews his working relationship with Ben Langdon,

McCanns’ chief executive, who hired him for the then Still Price Lintas

in 1989.

Cameron will be the group director with responsibility for new-business

development. He spent six years at JWT where he worked on Barclays and

Brooke Bond. He switched to Maher Bird in August 1994 to run the

agency’s First Mortgage Securities and Next business.

He joins McCanns after a year that has seen what the agency claims to be

its best new-business performance for seven years, highlighted by the

capture of the pounds 12 million Esso full-service account (Campaign, 21

March 1997).

Langdon aims to extend McCanns’ base of blue-chip clients with new

accounts that will raise the shop’s creative profile.

He said: ’I need somebody like Hugh with energy and stamina who will get

people through the door and help me win the business.’
