MEC scoops Aegon UK media account

LONDON - The WPP-owned Mediaedge:cia has won the estimated £3 million UK media planning and buying account for Aegon, the life insurance and pensions provider.

MEC won the account after a pitch against the incumbent, Ptarmigan Media, and other undisclosed agencies.

The Dutch insurer first called the review in October last year following the appointment of Steve Clode as its UK director of marketing and consumer strategy.

Aegon UK appointed Leith to handle its ad account in September with a brief to create a new communications strategy for the company.

In the same month, it signed an estimated £30 million, five-year deal with the Lawn Tennis Association to become the first lead partner of British tennis.

Last month, Aegon, which took over Scottish Equitable in 1999, received €3 billion from the Dutch government to strengthen its capital base.

Separately, MEC has also picked up the media planning and buying account for Lakeside Thurrock shopping centre, without a pitch. The account was previously held by the regional agency Ekay.
