MEDIA CHOICE: ITV2

Reviewing ITV2 at the weekend reminded me of our company party last week, where on the same dance floor the cool, young things moved elegantly and with dignity alongside me, desperately trying to pretend I could compete with my ’one dance for all tracks’ fit-like spasm.

Reviewing ITV2 at the weekend reminded me of our company party last

week, where on the same dance floor the cool, young things moved

elegantly and with dignity alongside me, desperately trying to pretend I

could compete with my ’one dance for all tracks’ fit-like spasm.

I was very impressed with my 48-hour test drive of ITV’s shiny new

model.

The team has been very smart by threading in firm favourites but also

giving them a twist. For example, Emmerdale gets a Sunday omnibus

scheduled ahead of Eastenders. The Street runs about two weeks behind

ITV, providing a handy catch up opportunity, and there are highlights of

Good Morning.

There are also plenty of new offerings to whet the appetite and balance

the tried and tested acts. ITV has set about repackaging popular faces:

Trevor McDonald hosts Trevor McDonald meets ... This week he met Lenny

Henry.

John Suchet gets a series and Reg Gutteridge teams up with Harry

Carpenter in an inspired duo reviewing great boxing matches.

Rising stars get a chance to spread their wings, such as Katie Derham

with her media magazine, and the Saturday football results service,

Football First, is as good as Sky’s, if not better.

ITV2 represents a breath of fresh air for any multi-channel home, a

palatable cocktail that combines the best of ITV with fresh,

interesting, high-quality programming that should make C4, C5 and Sky

sit up.
