Emap Metro is claiming a first by splitting the front cover of its

teen music title, Smash Hits, into five creative executions, each

featuring a different Spice Girl.

Emap aims to capitalise on the fresh wave of interest surrounding the

all-girl group, which will reach fever pitch at Christmas with the

launch of the Spice Girls’ Movie.

Emap has increased the print run of the fortnightly Smash Hits from

500,000 to 600,000. However, general manager Margaret Heffenon declined

to reveal the individual breakdown of the covers. She added that Emap

would be tracking sales carefully.

In addition, the publisher has tweaked its current advertising campaign,

which has been running since 13 August, to include details of the

promotion.
