- United News & Media, the owner of Express Newspapers and one of the three big players in the ITV network, has thrown its weight behind the management buyout team seeking to take control of Talk Radio.

United's backing for the MBO team follows the decision two weeks ago of its newspaper rival, News International, to back a consortium led by Kelvin MacKenzie for the station.

The MBO team, headed by Talk Radio general manager Paul Robinson, confirmed it has submitted a bid to buy control of the station from majority share CLT at the weekend. The deadline for bids was 5pm on Friday.

It is the first time that either United or News International have attempted a move into radio, having contented themselves to date with newspaper and television holdings.
