Media: Zeitgeist - Patrick Marber's play of sex and lies gets the Hollywood treatment

At last, Julia Roberts in a film set in London with a bit more subtlety than Notting Hill. Closer, an adaptation of Patrick Marber's highly acclaimed West End hit, tells the bleakly passionate tale of two couples and their infidelities.

Not recommended for a first date, it stars Roberts and Jude Law, with support from Natalie Portman and Clive Owen. The film's structure is unusual; it jumps about in time, enhancing the confusion and deception felt by the characters. Sony is gunning for a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars and all the ingredients are there: a quality cast and classy direction (from The Graduate's Mike Nichols) against a backdrop of London's aluminium skies.

Marber's play has been produced in more than 100 cities across the world, so audiences will be familiar with the plot and eager to see if it survives Hollywood intact.
