MediaCom's Schmidt-Vogel to head Cannes media jury

LONDON - Alexander Schmidt-Vogel, the worldwide chief executive of MediaCom, has been appointed jury president for the 2004 Media Lions to be held next June in Cannes.

He becomes the first German to take on the prestigious role.

Schmidt-Vogel is a media veteran of some 27 years standing. He started his career as a media trainee at Gramm & Grey in Dusseldorf in 1976. In 1988, he become chief executive of the newly established MediaCom Germany and eight years later was appointed chairman and chief executive of MediaCom Europe. He became MediaCom's worldwide chief executive in April last year.

Roger Hatchuel, the festival chairman, said: "We are delighted that Alexander will head this year's media jury. He will be the first German jury president in any of the Cannes competitions. His international media experience will be a real asset in leading the jury."
