MindGames closed by BBC Magazines

BBC Magazines Bristol, the publisher's specialist arm, has closed high-brow monthly puzzles magazine MindGames after just nine issues.

The publisher said that news-stand sales figures for the first seven months showed that the puzzle market was too niche to generate the revenues needed to keep it going.

MindGames, which debuted in June last year, was tied in to a BBC Four panel game of the same name and targeted crossword and sudoku fans with a combination of puzzles.

But it failed to bring the intended ABC1 readers into a market dominated by mass-market offerings from publishers including H Bauer and Puzzler Media.

BBC Magazines Bristol will also suspend bbcmindgames.com, a website linked to the title that offered a branded "pub quiz" podcast.
