The awards were broadcast on Channel 5 as well as MTV for a second year, after the channel was sold to Viacom in 2014 for £450 million.

The two-hour show aired "as live" at 9pm on Sunday evening from the Mediolanum Forum in Milan. Canadian pop star Justin Bieber picked up five awards and performed on the night.

Other performers included Jason Derulo, Andrea Bocelli, and Pharrell Williams.

Viacom said 600,000 people voted in the awards.

Last year’s show took place at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow and celebrated its 20th anniversary.
