Murdoch heads list of influential women as media dominates

LONDON - The influence of the media is clearly displayed in Good Housekeeping's 100 Most Influential Women in the UK list. Top of the list is Sky’s Elisabeth Murdoch and more than a quarter come from the media world.

Pearson’s chief executive Marjorie Scardino was fourth; head of Walker

Media, Christine Walker, came in 11th; and The Guardian’s managing

director Caroline Marland 14th.

Newspapers were also represented by two Fleet Street editors - Janet

Street-Porter (24) and Rosie Boycott (26) - as well as The Economist’s

Helen Alexander (31) and New Statesman’s Cristina Odone (68).

The BBC was well represented with BBC 2 controller Jane Root (34),

director of policy and planning Patricia Hodgson (41), BBC radio

director Jennifer Abramsky (42), Newsnight’s Kirsty Wark (59), Today’s

Sue MacGregor (73), BBC News’ Kate Adie (84) and Woman’s Hour’s Jenni

Murray (91) all featuring in the list.

Other broadcasters were Channel 5’s Dawn Airey (58), Hat Trick

Productions co-founder Denise O’Donoghue (67) and the ubiquitous Carol

Vorderman (72).

Apart from Walker, the only other advertising agency inclusion is Tamara

Ingram, chief executive of Saatchi & Saatchi (97).
