- The formation of a powerful European television alliance looked more likely yesterday as it emerged that Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation might still join an alliance involving Germany, Italy and France.

News Corporation said it had been invited to join the series of alliances agreed at the weekend by the German Kirch Group and Italian group, Mediaset. The French Group, Canal Plus, is also thought be involved. It had recently been holding talks with News Corp.

News Corp left the negotiations after disagreements over value and structure but Letizia Moratti, chairman of News Corp Europe, said that talks between News Corp and the other companies were continuous.

Speaking at a conference in London organised by Dow Jones, Moratti said News Corp was now examining the possibility of joining the deal.

The joint venture between the Italian and German groups will be underpinned by a series of cross shareholdings.

The two have agreed to set up a new company called European Television Network to take stakes in broadcasting operations, including their own stations.
