- Simon Waldman is to become head of the Guardian's internet operation, Guardian Unlimited, following the announcement that Justin Walters is to leave the company for his own internet start-up venture.

Waldman, who is currently editor of Guardian Unlimited, will assume responsibility for the commercial, editorial and marketing areas of the network on Walters' departure at the end of November.

Walters will, however, continue to work in a consultancy role with Guardian Newspapers.

Carolyn McCall, deputy managing director of Guardian Newspapers said: "Justin brought a wealth of talent, expertise, and tireless energy to Guardian Unlimited. Justin and Simon have developed Guardian Unlimited into one of the most innovative and successful online publishing ventures in the UK. Simon has a huge amount of experience and is ready to take the network forward to even greater levels.

Waldman joined Guardian Unlimited in 1996 and became editor in 1998. Before this he was a journalist specialising in the internet and new media.
