New title to offer a mix of fashion and football

The former Esquire editor Peter Howarth is launching a new magazine that will combine fashion and football.

The Newspaper Magazine, a bi-annual title, will combine fashion shoots using footballers as models with features on sport and fashion.

Show Media, Howarth's company, is producing the magazine on behalf of Absolute Publications and its managing director Jason Ambrose. The first issue of The Newspaper Magazine, so-called because it is broadsheet size and borrows the style of newspaper sports pages, goes on sale on 14 November.

The England international defender Sol Campbell is the cover star and other footballers appearing in fashion shoots include Ashley Cole, Andy Cole and Simon Davies.

Howarth said the magazine, which will have a cover price of £5, will aim to capitalise on the increasing involvement of football and footballers in fashion. He cited David Beckham's profile, designers such as Paul Smith and Armani dressing the England team and regular catwalk appearances by the England goalkeeper David James as signs the two worlds have collided.

"This is not something I consider as that leftfield. The idea of footballers as fashion icons has been around for a while," Howarth said. "The amount of attention heaped on Beckham and his haircuts is disproportionate compared to the number of other players who are young, stylish and fashionable."

The title will have an initial newsstand print run of 20,000 and will also be distributed to professional footballers. Advertisers include Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, Paul Smith and Hugo Boss.
