Carlton UK Sales, the sales operation for Carlton and Central
Television, is expected to begin selling its first non-terrestrial TV
channel later this year.
Expansion of the Carlton sales house is likely following the acquisition
earlier this week of the cable channel, SelecTV, by Carlton Television.
Sales for the cable channel, currently handled by the cable TV sales
house, Wood Lynds, are now expected to come under the Carlton UK Sales
Martin Bowley, the managing director of Carlton UK Sales, said it was
too early to comment on detailed sales arrangements.
SelecTV, which is available in around one million homes across the
country, was launched as a platform for the eponymous production
company’s programming library.
Now Carlton plans to use the channel to broadcast its own material. This
will include Carlton productions such as Kavanagh QC, as well as Central
TV-made shows like Peak Practice. Central also has an extensive
programming library which includes old series of Soldier Soldier and
Carlton’s first move into non-terrestrial broadcasting follows the
announcement last year that Granada Television is to launch a tranche of
satellite channels with BSkyB, including a Granada gold channel of old
Separately, SelecTV’s production facilities and programme catalogue have
been snapped up by Pearson and are set to be used by Pearson’s Channel 5
Broadcasting consortium for the fifth terrestrial TV channel, expected
to launch early next year.
