Damon Hill, Britain’s leading Formula One racing driver, has teamed up

with Murray Walker, the sport’s high-octane TV commentator, in a fresh

burst of celebrity advertising for Pizza Hut.

Hill makes his advertising debut on national TV this Friday in the third

ad in a series featuring famous faces.

The new film, which will run for five weeks, takes an affectionate swipe

at Walker’s extrovert style as he insists on providing a running

commentary on the pizza meal he and Hill are sharing.

The commercial further distances Pizza Hut from the ‘hit the hut’

campaign through Duckworth Finn Grubb Waters. It falls into line with

the chain’s global strategy, which has been adopted in the UK since

Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO took over the pounds 4 million account a year

ago.

Abbott Mead was briefed to build on the company’s US ad strategy of

promoting high standards of service and product quality through

celebrity endorsements.

Cilla Snowball, the Abbott Mead client services director, said: ‘Walker

and Hill are popular and instantly recognisable, and they were very keen

to do the film. There’s no doubt that the advertising has caused

consumers to re-appraise the brand and is bringing lapsed users back.’

The pizza chain claims a major upturn in its fortunes since the

appearance of the new star-studded ads, which began with the launch of

its stuffed-crust pizzas. Since the arrival of the product in October,

Pizza Hut claims to have twice broken its record for takings in a single

week.
