Kevin Deakin, the former sales director at Golden Rose Communications,
has re-emerged as national sales director at the GWR Group.
The Swindon-based radio group is poised to open a London office next
week to give GWR a presence in the capital. It will be staffed by Deakin
and GWR’s head of national sales, Jonathan Bradley.
The move fuels speculation that GWR will launch its own sales operation
within the year. The group, which includes stations such as GWR FM,
Beacon Radio, Mercia FM and Leicester Sound, currently splits its sales
between two sales houses, Independent Radio Sales and Media Sales and
Deakin’s brief is to enhance GWR’s profile in London. The role is
designed to help clients who are looking to broaden methods of radio
usage, including possible contra and barter arrangements.
Simon Ward, GWR’s group sales and marketing director, said: ‘Kevin is a
creative sales expert who will make GWR more accessible alongside our
sales houses, one-stop sponsorship shop, co-operative advertising unit
and national sales effort.’
Denise Perry, head of radio at Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, said: ‘This
suggests GWR could have a long-term plan to set up its own sales house.
There have been suggestions that Emap might do it - why shouldn’t GWR?
At the moment, this looks like GWR having station representation in
‘Kevin did a good job at Jazz FM. If he can do the same thing at GWR it
makes sense. It’s becoming a very competitive market.’
Deakin left Golden Rose in May, having been at the company for three
years. Before that he was a sales representative at IRS.
