Glitterati from the arts and media arena will grace next year’s judging
panel for the D&AD Awards as part of a revamp by its incoming president,
Graham Fink.
Fink, who next year takes over as president from Mary Lewis, has
broadened the judging panel to include art and media names such as
Damien Hirst, Martin Amis, Will Self, Gilbert and George, and Bob
Mortimer.
In defence of this controversial decision, Fink said: ‘Advertising is
influenced by books, TV and films, so it is right that these arts should
be represented on the judging panel.’
Fink’s second policy change is the setting up of specialist juries to
judge each of the categories. Last year, 36 judges, divided into three
groups, were asked to sift through 14,000 entries over five days,
resulting in the defection of many judges who could not spare the time.
Finally, he has established a new category for art direction, which it
is hoped will attract extra entries.
