Granada Sky Broadcasting, the satellite TV joint venture between Granada
Television and BSkyB, has poached Atlantic 252’s commercial director,
Andy Hawkins, to be executive sales director of its sales operation.
Hawkins will head a team of up to 30 people selling airtime for the
eight Granada Sky stations, which are expected to launch in the autumn.
As the operation’s sales director, Hawkins will join the Granada Sky
Broadcasting management committee and the board of Laser Sales, the
Granada-owned airtime sales house.
Mick Desmond, the chief executive of Laser, said that Hawkins had been
chosen for his solid sales experience, which includes ten years in
radio sales. ‘Andy’s a true salesman - he’s hungry, and he’s widely
known in the media-buying fraternity,’ Desmond said.
Desmond was keen to look outside the traditional TV sales environment
for the satellite sales chief. Because of the niche appeal of many of
the satellite channels, a different sales approach is thought to be more

satellite TV market, he was confident that ‘the strengths in both
programming and commercial operations will combine to make an attractive

station using the Granada TV and LWT libraries, a health and beauty
channel, a homes and gardens channel, a discussion channel, a channel
covering men and motoring, a food and wine channel, a TV shopping guide
and a lifestyle channel.
