Calvin Klein is secretly preparing to launch a second unisex fragrance
following the success of its CK1 brand last year. The cosmetics company
has hired the celebrated US photographer, Richard Avedon, to direct the
launch commercial for CK2. The shoot is expected to begin in the next
two weeks in New York, with a view to a probable spring launch.
The Government plans to tighten its voluntary code on tobacco
advertising to include gift catalogues sent out by direct mail. Anti-
smoking groups claim that vouchers included in packets have driven a
‘coach and horses’ through the agreement by encouraging people to smoke
more. The Advertising Standards Authority had been poised to uphold
complaints against one promotional scheme but ministers blocked the
Terry’s Suchard has shortlisted two agencies, BMP DDB Needham and Young
and Rubicam, to pitch for its pounds 4 million Terry’s Chocolate Orange
business. The original shortlist included BMP, the present incumbent on
the business, plus Y&R, Ogilvy and Mather and Bates Dorland, a late
entrant. Campaigns by BMP and Y&R are currently in research.
ITV is signalling its continued commitment to targeting male viewers
with quality sport by holding a football evening next Monday for media
buyers. Buyers will have the opportunity to meet the sports
personalities, Brian Moore, Kevin Keegan and Ron Atkinson, and can quiz
them on issues relating to sport on TV. The move follows this week’s
decision by the Government to preserve top sporting events on
Faulds Advertising has lost two more staff to the Union, the breakaway
agency that officially opened its doors earlier this month. Mark Reid,
Faulds’ deputy planning director, will become the Union’s planning
director, and Charlotte Mitchell-Henry, Faulds’ creative co-ordinator,
will become the Union’s head of creative services. Reid is being
replaced at Faulds by David McGlone, who joins from Advertising
Principles as a senior planner.
HMV Records has reduced the shortlist for its pounds 5 million media
buying and planning account to two after a first round of pitches. BMP
DDB Needham will line up against TMD Carat in the second round.
Universal McCann and the incumbent, CIA Medianetwork, have fallen out of
The Barbican, the arts and entertainment centre in the City of London,
is seeking an advertising agency. The Barbican’s publicity officer, Paul
Legrave, said the search was still at an early stage and that no
shortlist had yet been drawn up.
Wendy Proctor, the group account director on the Sun Alliance business
at Leagas Shafron Davis and the driving force behind the company’s
controversial TV campaign last year, has been promoted to the agency’s
management board. She was previously a board director at Young and
Rubicam and CME KHBB.
The sponsorship and advertiser-supplied programming company, PHD
BigTime, launched by the media independent, Pattison Horswell Durden,
has made its first senior appointment. The company has hired Zoe Fuller,
a former Channel 4 sales manager, as an account director.
The shortlist to pitch for Linda McCartney’s pounds 1 million vegetarian
foods business, owned by Ross Young, consists of Mellors Reay, Cowan
Kemsley Taylor and Walsh Trott Chick Smith. The account was previously
held by GGT, which launched its first work for the brand in April 1993.
