Newspaper Publishing, the publisher of the Independent and Independent

on Sunday, is putting together a sales team dedicated to generating new

revenue streams for the papers.

The new operation will be headed by Duncan Eaton, a sales group head,

who takes the new post of business development manager and will run a

team of around five sales development executives.

The business development unit is designed to bring together editorial,

advertising and marketing to offer advertisers broader commercial

opportunities right across the papers’ activities.

Eaton will be talking to agencies and advertisers about new commercial

vehicles such as sponsorship and marketing tie-ins.

The papers have already secured several high-profile sponsorships. Eaton

now plans to increase the frequency of special supplements and

sponsorships in the titles.

Eaton claimed that Newspaper Publishing was unique among the broadsheet

publishers in centralising its non-display advertising opportunities in

this way.

‘We can offer advertisers a lot more than just an ad in tomorrow’s

paper,’ Eaton explained. ‘This is a structured way of offering

advertisers new and different ways to tap into the brand values of our

titles.’

Eaton will also take on new responsibilities for client sales, talking

direct to advertisers about commercial opportunities.

Jeremy Reed, Newspaper Publishing’s advertisement sales director, said:

‘The development of a client sales unit demonstrates our commitment to

expanding our knowledge of our advertisers’ needs, thus helping us to

meet those needs via the pages of our titles.’
