Newspaper Publishing, the publisher of the Independent and Independent
on Sunday, is putting together a sales team dedicated to generating new
revenue streams for the papers.
The new operation will be headed by Duncan Eaton, a sales group head,
who takes the new post of business development manager and will run a
team of around five sales development executives.
The business development unit is designed to bring together editorial,
advertising and marketing to offer advertisers broader commercial
opportunities right across the papers’ activities.
Eaton will be talking to agencies and advertisers about new commercial
vehicles such as sponsorship and marketing tie-ins.
The papers have already secured several high-profile sponsorships. Eaton
now plans to increase the frequency of special supplements and
sponsorships in the titles.
Eaton claimed that Newspaper Publishing was unique among the broadsheet
publishers in centralising its non-display advertising opportunities in

paper,’ Eaton explained. ‘This is a structured way of offering
advertisers new and different ways to tap into the brand values of our
