Ogilvy and Mather looks set to scoop Kodak’s pounds 6 million UK
business following the company’s decision last week to pool its global
advertising into its roster agencies, O&M and J. Walter Thompson.
Kodak has yet to decide how the pounds 200 million global spoils will be
shared between the two WPP agencies (Campaign, last week). However, JWT
will find it near-impossible to take the UK business because it handles
Boots the Chemist, a significant rival in photographic products.
JWT lost out on Kodak business once before in October 1994. At the time
it was publicly known that Gayton Lambiase, Kodak’s newly appointed
marketing director, was deeply unhappy about the agency’s pounds 18
million Boots win earlier that year.
Tom Bury, O&M’s managing director, said he had not been told that O&M
had won the full-service business: ‘We are aware that JWT has a
potential conflict in Boots and that it has reared its ugly head in the
past.’ No-one at JWT was available for comment.
