Oil Factory, the London music video company famous for its work with
Britpop bands such as Pulp and Blur, has set up a commercials production
arm, called Oil Factory Films.
Steve Dell, who has worked as a producer at J. Walter Thompson, Mustoe
Merriman Herring Levy and BMP DDB, will head the new venture. He has
been working on the project since February.
As a sign of its commitment to commercials production, Oil Factory Films
will open premises in Soho.
‘It is important that we are seen as players and not pretenders, so
moving into W1 from N1 is essential for us,’ Dell explained. ‘We want to
be as accessible to agencies as possible.’
Oil Factory Films will start up with six directors, including GGT’s
Dutch creative duo, Erik Kessels and Johan Kramer, who directed the
agency’s latest Ariston ads. The five other directors are already signed
up to the Oil Factory.
One of the directors, Jamie Thraves, was included in this year’s Saatchi
and Saatchi new directors showcase. He has previously made a Shellys
Shoes commercial for Mustoe Merriman and a Heineken spot for Bartle
The directing duo, Vegetable Vision, meanwhile, who have a background in
producing experimental visuals at raves and concerts, recently produced
a Guardian ad for Leagas Delaney.
Oil Factory Films will also represent Earle Sebastian, who has made
videos for Madonna and the Fugees; Sophie Muller, who has directed
promos for Annie Lennox and Shakespear’s Sister; and Wiz, who is best
known for his work with the Irish group, Therapy.
