The Sunday Express has kicked off a review of its creative advertising
account as its new editor, Sue Douglas, continues her attempt to
revitalise the ailing tabloid.
Douglas and Ian Birrell, her deputy editor, have been trawling agencies
and are close to drawing up a shortlist.
Agencies thought to be on the list include Howell Henry Chaldecott Lury,
Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO and Lowe Howard-Spink. D’Arcy Masius Benton and
Bowles, which handles the Daily Express’s creative account, is also
tipped to be a shortlisted candidate.
The account has been handled by Leo Burnett for the past two years, but
it is not clear whether the agency will be asked to repitch.
Douglas admitted she was conducting a review of the account but refused
to give any further details. Nick Brien, Burnetts’ managing director,
commented: ‘Since Sue Douglas has come in, she has been reviewing
everything and that includes agency relationships. It was expected and
it has happened.’
