NFL eyes up London's Wembley Stadium as game venue

LONDON - American Football's governing body the National Football League has contacted potential sponsors about staging one of its games at the new Wembley Stadium in 2006.

NFL Europe has provisionally booked Wembley Stadium for next October, five months after it is officially due to open. The tie is likely to involve two of the East Coast teams, with the New York Giants a primary target.

In order to stage a game in the UK, NFL Europe needs to match the profit margins of the major American Football venues in the US. This would mean attracting multi-million-pound sponsorship .

Talks have begun with a number of major brands as well as the London Development Agency and the Mayor's office.

The NFL's plan to raise its profile by allowing other countries to stage games will see Mexico host an Arizona Cardinals game next month.
