On the surface, it would appear that Gilbert’s marketing career has come full circle. The former Virgin Media marketing chief joined TSB in December last year, after the banking brand was siphoned off from parent Lloyds Banking Group at the behest of the European regulators. To an extent, Gilbert is back on familiar ground: he was chief marketing officer of the group following the merger of Lloyds TSB and HBOS, but departed in late 2009, a year after the bank was bailed out by taxpayers. Now that TSB is a standalone brand, Gilbert insists the bank will place local communities at the heart of its business and marketing. His background working agency-side, on accounts such as HSBC, and in corporate affairs, alongside his marketing experience, should stand him in good stead.
