- NTL has joined the GWR Group and Talk Radio as a shareholder in the Digital One consortium, which is bidding for the national commercial digital radio licence. The cable operator replaces Ginger Media Group, which has resigned its shareholding.
The switch comes only a week before all bids are due to be handed into the Radio Authority.
Ginger, the owner of Virgin Radio, will still take up its place on the national multiplex alongside Classic FM and Talk Radio despite its decision to withdraw as a shareholder its station
According to a GWR Group spokesman, Ginger pulled out following a disagreement with one of the other partners over the structure of Digital One.
David Campbell, chief executive of Ginger, commented: "Whilst we have decided not to take up the shareholding offered to us within the consortium, Virgin will still have a presence on the digital multiplex, broadcasting alongside the country's other independent national radio stations."
