Ian Dickens, the marketing director of Olympus who launched the

humorous pan-European campaign featuring the actress Joan Collins and

the supermodel Naomi Campbell, is leaving to sail around the world.

Dickens joined in 1979 as a sales office order entry clerk. He was

promoted to general manager of the consumer division in 1986 with a

place on the main board of directors in 1992, and launched the company’s

first pan-European campaign in 1998.

Lowe Lintas created ads where Campbell was transformed into an old woman

and Collins became a stalker pursuing a photographer because his Olympus

camera would pick up every wrinkle.

Dickens also drafted in the actors George Cole and Dawn French for a

campaign where celebrities fail to recognise the photographer David

Bailey.

’I have consistently pushed for bold and aggressive creativity,’ Dickens

said .

For the next 11 months he will be the circumnavigator on board the

London Clipper competing in The Times Clipper 2000 round-the-world yacht

race.

The marketing manager, Sara Cubitt, will take over his duties.
