subscribers this spring, it will compete with Open, BSkyB’s interactive

service.

Onmail, in its trial phase, is up and running as an e-mail service that

can be accessed while watching TV. A spokesperson for ONdigital said

that e-mail is only part of a broader range of interactive services

linked to the internet.

ONdigital said it was too early to confirm available ad

opportunities.

Meanwhile, Open this week announced that nearly half of Sky Digital’s

customers access the service at least once a week, and it received at

least eight million visits between its launch and Christmas. James

Ackerman, Open’s chief executive, said 350,000 people were signed up to

its e-mail service, and the HSBC banking option attracted more than

40,000 customers.

Open also revealed that Gameplay, one of its biggest advertisers,

accounted for over 50 per cent of the company’s online revenue in

December. Ackerman said: ’As the customer base rises, consumers become

more familiar with the service and new content, interactive ads and

enhanced television opportunities arrive.’

Telewest announced this week that it has signed another 15 companies to

its interactive TV services, including British Airways and Yellow

Pages.

Telewest plans to launch a home shopping and information service in

March.
