Ben Hedges dropped out of school at the tender age of 16, shunning

A’ levels for the big bad world of work.

His first job was flogging Swindon Cable back in 1988. Hedges was handed

the keys to a white Ford Escort emblazoned with the Swindon Cable logo

and was told to get out there and sell the pounds 12-a-month cable

packages.

’It was a really easy sell because Sky had just started up but there

were a lot of people who didn’t want to put an ugly satellite dish on

the outside of their house,’ he recalls.

Unfortunately, his driving skills were not as hot as his sales

patter.

He crashed the Escort three times in the space of three months and was

promptly sacked. ’I offered to drive my own car but they still said no,’

says Hedges ruefully.
