"I started out as a Lloyd's broker. It was hard work and the
environment was very traditional, and because I was extremely young I felt I was growing old before my time.
"The system is archaic: the brokers sit at windows with ledgers, and you
have to queue up for them with your broking case. Most people pop down
the pub while they’re waiting, but as I was only 16 I couldn’t very well
do that.
"It prepared me for sales in some ways, notably by developing my
interpersonal skills and teaching me about business. But I think you
either have an inherent aptitude for sales or you don't."
