customers something for the weekend

At the age of 14, Stan Park was already involved in delicate

negotiations.

His father, a pharmacist, set him up with his first job behind the

counter at Bishops Chemist in Tunbridge Wells. But Park discovered there

was more to the job than donning a white coat.

’It was the tail-end of the 60s and you weren’t able to put

contraceptives on display. A constant stream of men would come in,

furtively lean over the counter and whisper a request for a packet of

Durex.’

Park also peddled around town on a 30s bicycle, delivering

medicines.

After all, a teenager with easy access to condoms needs to keep fit

somehow.
