Paul Gibbins, senior agency sales executive at Excite UK, once had
a touch of the Arfur Daleys
’I worked as a new and used car salesman at a Volkswagen garage when I
was 19. The job was OK but it offered a very low basic salary with a
very high commission.
’We also had to work one in every three Sundays, from 10am till 2pm, and
two in every three Saturdays.
’The Sundays were nasty - it’s not much fun flogging cars with a
hangover - but Saturdays were worse because I’m a big Spurs fan and it
meant missing the game. I would often disappear mysteriously from work
between 3pm and 4.45pm on Saturdays - although I can’t quite recall
where I went.’
