Soames Hines, global marketing director at Letsbuyit.com, didn’t
mind working overtime.
’I started out in advertising as a nipper, joining Ogilvy & Mather in
1980 as a trainee at the age of 18. I could have been a copywriter but
something about the title ’trainee executive’ appealed to me, so I went
into account management.
’I loved the advertising business so much that I was genuinely sorry
when the weekend arrived. It helped that I was working with the likes of
Michael Baulk, now head of BBDO Europe, and Andrew Robertson, who runs
Abbott Mead Vickers.
’But the job also led to various other adventures - like setting up
J.Walter Thompson’s China operation. That was good practise for
establishing a dotcom brand - there was the same sense of an exploding
