’I started out in advertising as a nipper, joining Ogilvy & Mather in

1980 as a trainee at the age of 18. I could have been a copywriter but

something about the title ’trainee executive’ appealed to me, so I went

into account management.

’I loved the advertising business so much that I was genuinely sorry

when the weekend arrived. It helped that I was working with the likes of

Michael Baulk, now head of BBDO Europe, and Andrew Robertson, who runs

Abbott Mead Vickers.

’But the job also led to various other adventures - like setting up

J.Walter Thompson’s China operation. That was good practise for

establishing a dotcom brand - there was the same sense of an exploding

market.’
