The Omnicom agency has held the UK part of the multi-market business since December 1998.

The move is believed to leave WPP agencies Maxus and Mediaedge:cia,  as well as Publicis Groupe's  ZenithOptimedia, battling for the BBC business, which incorporates an estimated £30m media planning and buying in the UK, US, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

According to The Nielsen Company, BBC Worldwide was responsible for £3m-worth of media spend in the UK in the 12 months to 30 June. It also spends £4m on direct mail and £1m on TV, which are not included in the review.

PHD's decision to relinquish the account follows its largest global client, Unilever, calling a potentially consolidating review of its global media business, estimated to be worth more than $1bn.
