In pictures: Heathrow launches scent destination installation

Heathrow Airport has enlisted the help of Design in Scent to create an interactive and multi-sensory installation themed around international destinations.


The installation, which launched on Sunday (26 October) and runs until 5 November, has been created to promote the airport’s Terminal 2 working at full capacity, with 26 airlines now operating from the location.

Located in the departures lounge at Heathrow’s Terminal 2, the installation centres on a giant ‘scent globe’ that will immerse participants in the aromas of South Africa, Japan, Brazil, China and Thailand. Passengers are able to instantly release streams of scented air with the touch of an icon on a touchscreen.

Design in Scent worked closely with perfumer Anastasia Brozler to produce bespoke scents using key ingredients associated with each country. This included of tribal incense and wild grass for South Africa, oceanic tones derived from seaweed and shell extracts for Japan and coffee, tobacco and Brazilian orchid scents for Brazil.

The fragrances of both China and Thailand will transport travellers to the Far East with such scents as incense, osmanthus flower, black tea, lemongrass, ginger and coconut.

Gemma Hopkins, director of Design In Scent, said: "We wanted to really capture the essence of the five nations and either rekindle the memories of passengers that have already experienced them, or enable those who have not yet explored them the chance to do so with their noses."

Normand Boivin, chief operating officer at Heathrow, added: "Heathrow connects the UK to 180 destinations in 28 countries and carries over 72 million passengers a year. Heathrow is the UK’s hub airport, mixing direct passengers, transfers and freight to make long haul flights viable. We strive to offer a unique experience that delights our passengers.

"These specially-created scents will give passengers travelling through Terminal 2 an exclusive preview of destinations that only Heathrow connects to."
