Trent joins from editorial agency Motoring Research, where he contributed to PistonHeads, as well as other online motoring publications such as MSN Cars.
Trent replaces Chris Rosamond, who edited the website in a freelance capacity. PistonHeads wanted to recruit an office-based editor. Rosamond will continue to write for the title on a freelance basis.
Prior to Motoring Research, Trent was editor of Mercedes Enthusiast magazine.
Stuart Forrest, PistonHeads' publishing director, said Trent had been brought in to deal with a growing audience. The site is also about to unveil a number of product developments across its classified platform.
Forrest said: "Dan will be leading the charge as we develop PistonHeads' editorial proposition significantly to meet the needs of our enormous, knowledgeable and highly engaged audience of car enthusiasts."
PistonHeads generates more than 200 million page impressions per month from more than four million unique users, making it the UK’s second largest motoring website, according to data from Hitwise.
The website’s forum generates more than 10,000 contributions every day.
Trent said: "Passionate, knowledgeable and opinionated, the PistonHeads community has a powerful voice and representing that is a huge responsibility."
