Portugal's tourist board starts review

Turismo de Portugal, the Portuguese national tourist board, is reviewing its estimated EUR8 million pan-European media planning and buying business, currently held by OMD.

The body has already contacted agencies inviting them to take part in a pitch for its media across European countries including the UK, Germany, Spain, France, Russia and the Netherlands.

The board's media spend in the UK last year was £1.5 million, according to Nielsen.

Portuguese sports figures such as Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo starred in an international ad campaign for Portugal launched by Turismo de Portugal in 2007.

The campaign, by BBDO Portugal, was designed to increase the country's visibility abroad and display a more modern, cosmopolitan and entrepreneurial Portugal.
