The chief executive of PR shop PrettyGreen and experiential agency The Producers has launched a lift-sharing app that connects friends who drive with friends who need a ride.
Skoot has launched on iOS and Android, and is co-founded by Mark Stringer and Greg Gormley, founder of loyalty app Bink.
The app links friends and then maps the best travel route while enabling auto collection of payment for petrol and running costs. The journey is carbon offset, as a tree is planted for every three rides taken.
When a driver registers their car on the app, a check is completed with the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency to ensure the car is roadworthy, confim that they have a valid driving licence and identify the CO2 rating of the vehicle. Skoot calculates the exact CO2 emitted every month and pays for the offset up to 110%, with each passenger contributing 5p per trip.
The launch plan for Skoot includes brand ambassadors, social media advertising, content, influencer activity and PR. PrettyGreen and The Producers are delivering the campaign.
Stringer said: "Skoot's been designed to address the huge issues of mobility, debt, safety and the environment, so we're excited about the potential and the launch. Co-founding Skoot was an easy decision as it aligned with my original vision for the agency to help launch start-ups.
"We've always been passionate about supporting start-ups, including helping them to launch and scale, because they have an amazing antenna for the future – rewriting playbooks, creating new markets and seeking out marketing channels more traditional brands can't employ. We have all been on an incredible journey to launch Skoot and it's so exciting to see the idea to come to life."
Skoot has secured £1.6m in funding, including a £50,000 grant from the Innovate UK fund.
The start-up employs 12 full-time staff in the UK and plans to expand across Europe, North America and Australia in the future.
