The company has shortlisted six undisclosed agencies to pitch for the business, which spans both the RBS and NatWest brands.

Initial credentials meetings were held last week and pitches are expected to take place in September.

One source said the RBS Group was looking for an agency with the right "strategic online direction", as it puts more of an emphasis on its digital activity.

It has approached both roster and non-roster agencies to pitch for the task.

The advertising incumbents, M&C Saatchi and CHI & Partners, are believed to be involved in the pitch.

CHI has produced digital campaigns for RBS's retail division and credit cards, while Play, M&C's digital arm, also produces digital advertising for RBS and has worked on projects for NatWest.

Twentysix London and TBWA\Manchester have worked on projects for the RBS Group, but are not thought to be involved in the review.
