The Independent Radio Group has appointed Katz Radio Sales as the

national sales agency for its six radio stations. Simon Lynds, Katz’s

chief executive, said: ’With representation in the north and south of

the UK, IRG is a critical gain for KRS.’ The appointment is effective

from the end of March.



United News and Media has recorded a 12 per cent increase in pre-tax

profits to pounds 290.2 million for the year to the end of December

1996. Operating profits for the consumer division were down 7.5 per cent

to pounds 81 million, while profits for the broadcasting division were

up 36 per cent to pounds 59.7 million.



Carlton Food Network has signed a pounds 100,000 sponsorship package

with Neff, the kitchen appliances manufacturer. Neff will become CFN’s

official kitchen equipment supplier and will run a series of

through-the-line promotions on the channel.



Granada Television has scotched reports that it is considering an

imminent purchase of Yorkshire Tyne Tees Television. Granada’s chief

executive, Gerry Robinson, said that a bid would not be mounted ’unless

circumstances change’. The statement knocked more than pounds 1 off the

YTT share price.



Western International Media has appointed two new broadcast managers to

work under Colm Feeney, the agency’s new broadcast director. Richard

Brooke joins Western from the Media Centre to work on IDV and Tesco,

while Hitesh Bhatt is promoted from senior account executive. Bhatt will

work on Vauxhall and Yardley.



This Friday (21 March) is the closing date for entries for the Newslink

radio creative award, in which the prize is pounds 500,000 worth of free

airtime.



To enter, agencies are required to produce an ad specifically for the

Newslink ad slot, which runs around IRN newsbreaks. Judging will take

place in April under the chairmanship of Tim Mellors of Mellors Reay and

Talk Radio and Bauer Publishing’s Bella magazine have struck a contra

deal in which Bella’s editor-in-chief, Jackie Highe, appears on the

Lorraine Kelly show in a slot called ’real-life issues’. Similarly, a

section in the magazine called ’real life’ features the Talk Radio logo

with further information about the radio show.



The Newspaper Society has named Philip Alan, a student at North

Warwickshire and Hinckley College, as the overall first prize winner in

the1996 Newspaper Society Creative Design Awards.



Nynex, the cable company, has appointed Mirror Television as its local

advertising sales operation in the North- west of England, where Nynex

has 1.8 million cable homes. The ad sales operation will be co-ordinated

with Manchester Live, also part of Mirror Television.



Eurosport and the oil manufacturer, Valvoline, have signed a new

integrated sales and marketing deal for the coming year. Valvoline will

sponsor the channel’s exclusive live coverage of the PPG Cart Indy World

Series as part of the deal, which was negotiated by the media company,

20/20 Media.



Conde Nast’s new health, fitness and lifestyle magazine, GQ Active,

launches on 3 April. It is backed by a nationwide TV, press, poster and

London Underground campaign featuring the strapline, ’Get a life. Get GQ

Active.’
