The BBC has failed in its £290 million bid to show the Champions League over three years. The contract has been awarded to ITV and BSkyB, which will screen matches from 2003. The appointment follows accusations from ITV that the BBC was trying to get round rules which ban advertising on any service funded by licence fees when it claimed it would run advertising as part of the deal. - General release.
