The brand consultancies, Interbrand and Newell & Sorrell, are to

merge.



The new company, Interbrand Newell & Sorrell, will have a combined

turnover of pounds 20 million. Interbrand created brand identities for

McVitie’s Hob Nobs and Prozac and the brand strategy for BP and Volvo.

Newell & Sorrell most recently created the new corporate identity for

British Airways. General release



Guinness Brewing Worldwide has poached Jon Potter, the marketing

director of Nestle’s joint venture company, Cokoladovny, to be its

European marketing director. Potter, currently based in the Czech

Republic, replaces Rob MacNevin who left the company in February to

become head of marketing at the cider manufacturer, Matthew Clark.

A multi-million pound bidding war to sponsor Manchester United is

expected as the club’s contract with the Japanese electronics group,

Sharp, ends next year. Experts believe United could command up to pounds

20 million for a four-year deal, four times as much as Sharp is paying.

Heinz has hired Premier Magazines to produce its At Home magazine,

following its decision to drop Redwood Publishing shortly after its

appointment in July. Premier will work alongside Heinz’s direct

marketing agency, WWAV Rapp Collins. General release



Pizza Hut hopes to recruit the British Mir astronaut, Michael Foale, to

star in an ad for its Sicilian pizza. Foale, who returned from space

this week, is expected to be paid pounds 20,000 for the ad, which will

have a space theme. The Sun



The Leith Agency has won the pounds 1.5 million Baxters soup account,

after a pitch against Bartle Bogle Hegarty and Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO.

The incumbent, the Glasgow agency, the Bridge, declined to repitch.

Barclaycard has joined with ITV to launch a sporting awards programme as

part of its pounds 6 million project supporting British sport. The ITV

Champions of Sports Awards, of which Barclaycard is the event and

broadcast sponsor, will be presented by Ulrika Jonsson and Dermot

Murnaghan live from Wembley on Saturday 1 November. General release



Save & Prosper has poached Pedigree Petfoods’ European head of direct

marketing, John Humpish, to replace Chris Cottrell as marketing

director.



Cottrell moved to Global Asset Management’s off-shore fund management

Havas Advertising has announced that its consolidated revenue for the

six months to 30 June 1997, has risen to FF25 billion. The increase is

5.1 per cent higher than the same period last year. Its operating income

amounted to FF536 million, a rise of 21 per cent year on year. General

Bartle Bogle Hegarty is continuing its ’Anyone can fly with Air Miles’

theme with a print campaign for families. The ads will appear on poster

sites in London and the South, and in national newspapers. General

Ariel, Procter & Gamble’s detergent brand, is to be the latest sponsor

of the England team in the run-up to the England v Italy World Cup

qualifier this Saturday. The washing powder will be the ’official

England kit cleaner’ until after the World Cup in summer 1998. Carlsberg

lager announced this week that it has become the ’official lager of the

England squad’. General release.
