Ron Scalpello quits BBC Broadcast and signs to Rogue Films

The director Ron Scalpello has joined Rogue Films from BBC Broadcast. Scalpello was one of BBC Broadcast's top directors. His reel includes the trailer for the BBC series Hustle and the award-winning Radio 5 Live "8 mile" promo, which put sports commentators on stage in a hip-hop-styled face-off. He is in the process of finishing his last project for the company - an original promo for the BBC Asian Network.

Scalpello joined the BBC in 1998 after graduating with a degree in film and video from the Surrey Institute of Art and Design. Previously, he was a music journalist and made a number of music videos while at college .

"I had a great time at the Beeb and did lots of work that I was really proud of," Scalpello said. "That work brought offers from a few production companies, which proved hard to resist. Rogue has a wealth of experience and has shown real confidence and conviction in my work," he added.

While serving his notice period with BBC Broadcast, Scalpello directed a 30-second spot for KFC Rice Bowls through Rogue for Bartle Bogle Hegarty.

"Wedding", Scalpello's ad for KFC, sees BBH shift its "soul food" campaign away from the aspirational towards naturalistic narrative, with a bride and groom marrying at a kitsch 70s-inspired wedding and holding their reception at the local pub.

BBC Broadcast is the corporation's commercial and promotional production arm. Its work for commercial clients recently prompted the Advertising Producers Association to complain to the BBC director-general, Mark Thompson.
