Safeway explores joining global online exchange

Supermarket giant Safeway is set to join one of the global business-to-business exchanges.

According to David Webster, Safeway's chairman, it is talking to more than one online exchange. It is also developing its own supplier information system.

He said, "We are in discussions with the new global internet exchange groupings with the intention of joining one of them. We plan to capitalize on the opportunities to both lower business costs and better serve our customers which the internet provides."

He added, "In the business-to-consumer area, we are planning to add the capability to conduct customer transactions through our web site as a prelude to the roll-out of our successful Collect & Go service beyond its pilot phase to more of our superstores in the year ahead."
